We have the iPhone 16 Pro version of this kit, which has been updated from the older iPhone 15 version. Designed in collaboration with SmallRig Brandon Lee, the kit supports two main scenarios:
- Simple Grip: A small grip attaches via a lever, making it easier to hold your phone for filming or photography.
- Full Cage Setup: You can attach handles and various accessories like microphones, SSDs, batteries, or monitors using the full cage. This setup offers tremendous flexibility depending on your needs.
Slim Case and Accessories
At the core of this kit is the slim case, which feels thinner than similar cases, like those from Moment. The case fits snugly on the iPhone 16 Pro and is pocket-friendly. It also has a step-up ring adapter for the included magnetic VND filter. Additionally, the kit consists of a plate for the camera cluster, enabling compatibility with Moment lenses. However, in my experience, the fit with Moment lenses felt slightly loose, so I’d likely prefer Moment’s case for lens use.
Unfortunately, this kit isn’t compatible with Moment’s Quick Lock filters, which I love. The SmallRig VND filter is larger and more noticeable, making it less discreet than Moment’s offerings.

Full Cage Setup and Mounts
The cage itself is where things get interesting. It allows you to attach handles and includes several mounting points (quarter-20 mounts and cold shoes) for accessories. However, you need to remove the step-up ring adapter for the VND filter to mount the phone in the cage—a minor inconvenience.
The quick-release handles can be easily repositioned for horizontal or vertical shooting. One handle features a built-in wireless remote that connects via Bluetooth, functioning as a shutter trigger. This is a convenient addition for photo and video mode, sparing you from reaching for the on-screen button.
Variable Neutral Density Filter (VND)
The VND filter darkens your image to help you achieve cinematic shutter speeds. While smooth and easy to adjust, it’s bulky and introduces some quirks. I noticed polarized effects depending on the camera’s orientation, something I haven’t encountered with other VND filters. While the filter works as intended, its size and visual footprint may deter some users.

Standalone Grip
The standalone grip is perfect for casual use. It’s compact and provides a more secure hold than the bare phone. It includes a quarter-20 mount for tripod compatibility and works with the VND filter if needed. However, the phone’s ergonomics still make it slightly awkward to reach the camera button or shutter.
Is It Worth It?
This kit won’t be essential for everyone, but it’s ideal for those who want to maximize their iPhone 16 Pro’s potential for professional video and photography. The cage offers stability and a platform for mounting accessories like microphones, lights, and SSDs. While I don’t use the cage daily, it’s a game-changer for projects requiring unique angles or added stability.
The iPhone 16 Pro is already incredible for photography and videography, but having the option to add functionality and stability makes this kit an excellent addition for creators.
